A: Both laminate flooring and hardwood flooring can elevate the elegance and beauty of a home. While hardwood is traditionally perceived as the superior choice, laminate flooring offers several enticing advantages. The unique attributes of laminate often position it as a more appealing alternative. Solid hardwood, typically ranging from 3/8" to 3/4", is recommended for installation only above grade. In contrast, laminate flooring boasts incredible versatility, allowing installation both above and below grade, and over almost any existing flooring surface. Some varieties of hardwood flooring are engineered with multiple layers topped by a hardwood veneer, whereas laminate flooring, generally 7mm to 8mm (5/16" to 3/8"), is constructed of several layers bonded for exceptional stability and strength. The top layer features a high-resolution photographic image of natural hardwood. Quality laminate flooring offers a stunningly authentic replication of the grain and color of real wood, and its surface mimics the tactile feel of genuine hardwood. Given its wood-based composition, laminate flooring should not be installed in areas prone to moisture, such as bathrooms, washrooms, saunas, enclosed porches, verandas, or any space that might require wet-mopping. Prolonged moisture exposure can lead to warping or swelling of the laminate's core. Nevertheless, with specific installation techniques, laminate floors can be accommodated in bathrooms, provided that water does not persist on the floor for extended periods. For such installations, a light bead of glue should be applied to the tongue sides of planks in spill-prone zones, and any spills should be cleaned and dried without delay.
